Identity, Ego in Pieces: 2023
And January TransArt Reading Blog
This piece represents a new way of working and solving new technical issues ( hanging systems, fragmentation of sections). I have been wanting the work to breath, to open, to break apart on a different realm. I wanted to combine drawing with the mosaic/sculpture/fragments to connect the pieces, considering drawing direct on the wall. I am pleased about the embedded information on the inscribed clay/ceramic- writings. poems, drawings that have been broken and reconstructed. It has the same quality as my notes and drawings, reflecting a phenomenology of organized chaos. Because the work is modular it can be reset and recomposed. I have yet to complete the center panel. Tentatively titled Severences.
Part of me wishes this process, this PhD journey, was just a detachable academic paper. Write a bit about history and experience, some of how I know what I know but, shit. Exposing myself in this new way . I have been hiding beneath the shards of my pieces. I make my work and I know what it is, let the work speak for itself. This is more difficult and painful than thought. I keep wondering how my story, what I know, is valuable with an academic art context. insecurities abound. 12/26
ABSTRACT
Mosaic, as a contemporary art medium, plays a large part in my intersectional art practice, which is a literal ‘mosaic’ of art methodologies, which I use to explore memory and trauma, maternalism and birth politics in works of sculptural, graphic and visual personal narratives. In my studio practice I use mosaic as a part of a formal language which alludes to brokenness and reinvention. How can a mosaic aesthetic apply to feminist discourses on maternal identity and maternal repair?
Mosaic is part of an interdisciplinary practice that embodies connection, reinvention and repair in both process and outcome. For my doctoral project, I will create, install and present a body of sculptural works and exhibition catalog to investigate and hypostatize maternalism and birth politics through the exploration of autobiographical feminist narratives. My written submission will contextualize and reflect upon my studio processes and techniques that intertwine post-generational trauma, identity and a specific art methodology. My research is situated and considered within existing paradigms of the present contemporary mosaic art pedagogy.
TransArt January Reading Blog:
In Marie Fahlin’s page, ‘Moving through Choreography – Curating Choreography as an Artistic Practice’. there is a wonderful creative, free form approach to documenting and presenting practice using a multidisciplinary format. I appreciate how the creative practices are intertwined and relational yet I wonder if the viewer is just meant to grab at bits and pieces haphazardly; I wanted and more intuitive and directed chronology to move from one work to another. Because my practice take varied elements and creates an order within a structure, this presentation felt chaotic and without a center ( centaur?). Perhaps that was the intention. Giving the limitations within performance practices ( theatre, dance etc) this is a exploratory method to create a lasting document and intertwine iit with drawing, collage, sculpture, and perfomance.

I was really distracted and uncomfortable with the formatting of these readings. I struggle with reading PDF formatting online because I need a tactile tangible paper or book that I can mark up or dog ear; that is part of my process of information intake. I found it very difficult to read because, much like the layout, the information is all over the place. There is no place for the eye to rest, or be drawn into a direction or designated movement to find your way.
Kinda ironic considering the way I take notes:
